Da Green Tide: Army complete!

Since I was up until about midnight on Friday night finishing off the last of the Black Orcs I was unable to get a post in to show that I had finished them and in turn also complete the entire Orc & Goblins army! I was a massive undertaking and led to a lot of sleepless nights but it’s something that I’m definitely proud of. In all, I painted the army from start to finish in about 6 weeks. Thanks to everybody for the words of encouragement as I was wading through the sea of green on my way to finishing them off.

So I was up late on Friday night, and as stated, I didn’t get the chance to show what was done. Well, Saturday was the Back to School Bash and we had our second biggest turnout for our Wheat Shocker Tournament Series – 18 people! We had some guys come up from Tulsa, Oklahoma and a couple of others from Lawrence, Kansas. Great times were had and I finally got my first win with the Da Green Tide against Brian Penrose’s High Elves. I ended up the day 1-1-1 and was able to walk away with the Best Painted Award, which is always nice since I try to do my best when it comes to painting my armies. So after all the last 5 weeks’ late nights, early mornings, and black spray paint, all of my hard work paid off and so I won Best Painted. I’m definitely gonna pat myself on the back for this one, it was hard to do but I got the whole army done. Here’s some pics I took on Saturday to show the whole army, as well as the Ork-y display board.

As far as the games go, some things went to plan and others not so much. But that’s the way things go when you play Orcs & Goblins. In true Orc-y fashion, during one game, I really needed both my Goblins and Savage Orcs to charge at the same time and… you guessed it… they failed their Animosity test and ended up squabbling… Seems like these things happen at the most inopportune times! I won against High Elves, lost to a Vampire Counts army, and had a draw against an all-Goblins army. In the draw, I firmly believe that I would’ve taken them out but we only got to turn 4 and we had to call it because we ran out of time and in that turn, I successfully broke 5 out of 6 units that were surrounding my Black Orcs. One more turn I believe I would’ve been able to catch some of the units and it might’ve given me more points to get a win instead of a draw. Either way, I faced 3 great opponents and always have a good time when I get to play Warhammer. The Orcs & Goblins are now completed and they’ll be looking forward to some more action in the near future!

Here’s the list of all that was completed (and a couple things that I’m adding to the mix!):

– Rock Lobba #2 (New addition!)

– 6 River Trolls (New addition!)

– Black Orc Warboss on foot (Complete!)

– Orc Big Boss Battle Standard Bearer on foot (Complete!)

Da Green Tide: 4-for-1 Special! Characters and the Orc Boy Chariot join the ranks!

Well there’s not a whole lot left to say… at this point it’s just time to post what I have completed. And you may be excited to know that all I have left is the 35 man unit of Black Orcs! I have pretty much convinced myself that they won’t be so difficult because they are black orcs and their armor is black! I have one evening left to paint 35 figures and I believe that I can do it! My wife has my back and she has even promised to keep the kiddos entertained while I finish off the last of my Orcs and Goblins army… So, tonight I was able to knock out the characters as well as the Orc Boy Chariot. It’s a 4-for-1 special! Take a look! First up, the Orc Big Boss Battle Standard Bearer!

stbearer2

Next is my Black Orc Warboss, which is the Grimgor Ironhide model, so I can use it as 2 choices if the option ever presents itself. I made the Black Orcs and Orcs a little bit darker shaded to show that they have been through much more than the weedy goblins and have battle hardened skin! Here he is, in all his tough glory!

grim5

I decided to add some bleached bone to his armor to show that he has adorned himself with all of his enemies and show that only the best armor has been reserved for him! Next up is the Savage Orc Shaman! In this list I just have one shaman to do my magical bidding and I’m hoping to be able to roll the Foot of Gork a few times. It’s a damaging spell that is powerful and makes you opponent think twice about sitting still!

Lastly, is the Orc Boy Chariot! I literally painted this model in 35 minutes and I think it shows. It’s not my best work but at least it gets the point across and helps me to field a fully painted army. I’ll let you be the judge. Thoughts?

That is the latest on Da Green Tide! I’m so close. The only thing left is the Black Orcs and they are intimidating. I started them tonight and I believe I’ll be able to finish everything off. Like I said, my wife has been very supportive and knows what I’m trying to accomplish. I told her that if I’m able to complete all of this then it’s a feat that most people can’t do…. A fully painted army in about 6 weeks… She’s been very helpful… Now onto the last 35 models… The dreaded Black Orcs! Here’s all that’s left!!!

– Black Orc Warboss on foot (Complete!)

– Orc Big Boss Battle Standard Bearer on foot (Complete!)

– Savage Orc Shaman on foot (Complete!)

Orc Warboss on Wyvern (Complete!)

38 Night Goblins with 2 Night Goblin Fanatics (Complete!)

32 Savage Orc Boys w/full command (Complete!)

– 35 Black Orcs w/full command (All that’s left!!!)

Snotling Pump Wagon (Complete!)

Mangler Squig #1 (Complete!)

Mangler Squig #2 (Complete!)

Da Green Tide: Night Goblins complete with Netters and Fanatics!

Tick, tock! Tick, tock! It seems like time is just flying by and everyday that passes is a day that gets closer to Back to School bash! I’m determined to get this army done! Here’s the latest addition to the Da Green Tide – a 38-man unit of Night Goblins, complete with 2 Night Goblin Fanatics.

goblins10

In my opinion, black is one of the hardest colors to make look great and I’ve rarely pulled it off. I went ahead and highlighted these guys capes with a grayish-black color that helps to really set it apart, if you get in close and look at it! Also, one of the other things I decided to was add some white triangular highlights around their hoods to further make them stand out among the normal black robes.

goblins9

I’m sure one of the other things you’ve noticed about this big unit is that not all the models in the unit are Night Goblins… Well, that’s because I’m cheap and I happened to have another unit of Squigs, Squig Herders, and Squig Hoppers that I thought would fit in perfectly with the unit, thus filling it out to 38 models when I only had a 20 man boxed set. Also, I added 3 different “counts as 4 models” unit fillers that consists of some Mad Cap Mushrooms, a captured Dwarf Slayer, and the statue of the moon that the Night Goblins worship. Sure, it’s cheap but it’s effective and helped save me about $40 of coin! Here’s a couple more pics:

Even though you can have up to 3 Night Goblin Fanatics in a standard unit, I decided to go with only 2 and add some netters (on the corners of the front rank) to complete my unit of Gobbos. Here’s some pics of the Fanatics:

Closer and closer I’m getting. Now I just need to knock out a couple more things but the hardest among what’s remaining is easily the 35 Black Orcs. I can do it! Here’s what’s left to complete by Friday!!!

– Black Orc Warboss on foot (Next!)

– Orc Big Boss Battle Standard Bearer on foot

– Savage Orc Shaman on foot

Orc Warboss on Wyvern (Complete!)

38 Night Goblins with 2 Night Goblin Fanatics (Complete!)

32 Savage Orc Boys w/full command (Complete!)

– 35 Black Orcs w/full command

The Green Tide: Rock Lobba ready to go!

Submitted by Iggy Koopa, August 6, 2014 at 9:12 AM.

Since I was on the theme of war machines I thought I’d continue on and start to paint and finish the next in my Orcs & Goblins war machine armory: The Rock Lobba! I actually had 2 of these in my initial army list but opted for only one with my updated list… we’ll see how that ends up working out for me. The Rock Lobba has received a very big upgrade (in my opinion) in the 8th edition (no more guessing!) and it can dish out some serious damage when it actually hits! Here’s the latest addition to the Green Tide, The Rock Lobba:

lobba

lobba4

I stuck with the same brown color for the wood portion of the Rock Lobba and picked out the metal parts with mithril silver. The crew are just weedy goblins so I painted them with snotling green and highlighted with bits of white added to it. I cut out a piece of balsa wood base to put everything on and then cut out squares with magnets underneath in order to make transit a little bit easier.

lobba5

lobba7

lobba2

In keeping with the theme of mushrooms throughout the army I added a small crop of them to the front of the Rock Lobba. I envision the Lobba being entrenched and never moving from one spot and so several tufts of grass and mushrooms have started to overgrow it, which is why there’s 3 of them. I think it helps break up the colors and ties it in with the overall theme of the army.

lobba3

lobba8

Well that’s it for now. Time to refocus my efforts and move on to the next thing because the 16th will be here before I know it. Next up will be the Night Goblins and then probably the Black Orcs… that’ll leave it open to finish off the characters in the end, which should go quickly. Here’s what’s left to do in the next 10 days:

– Black Orc Warboss on foot

– Black Orc Boss Battle Standard Bearer on foot

– Savage Orc Shaman on foot

Orc Warboss on Wyvern (Complete!)

– 38 Night Goblins with 2 Night Goblin Fanatics (Next!)

32 Savage Orc Boys w/full command (Complete!)

– 35 Black Orcs w/full command

Snotling Pump Wagon (Complete!)

Mangler Squig #1 (Complete!)

Mangler Squig #2 (Complete!)

Rock Lobba #1 (Complete!)

– Orc Boy Chariot

The Green Tide: Goblin Doom Diver takes aim!

Submitted by Iggy Koopa, August 5, 2014 at 9:15 AM.

Sticking with the theme of trying to cram as much painting in the next 11 days as I possibly can, I opted to go ahead and knock out yet another war machine for my Orcs & Goblins army: The Goblin Doom Diver. I’ve got some pretty good momentum going right now so I just need to stick it out and that should hopefully help me to get it all painted by August 16th (actually, August 15th…)! The task is daunting, but I’m determined to get it all done… I’ve even told the wife that I’m going to be spending an unusual amount of time painting over the next several days and she gave me the go ahead so that always helps. Here’s the latest addition:

diver

The Doom Diver has always been one of my favorite concepts for a model – an unaware Goblin volunteers to kill himself, and he may or may not know it until it’s too late. It’s highly amusing and fits in perfectly with the theme of Goblins. In gaming terms, it’s not too shabby either as it works similar to a Rock Lobber but because the weedy goblin has wings he can “maneuver” himself somewhat closer to the target and therefore he can roll a D6 and move that many inches closer to his target. If it hits, D6 Strength 5 hits with no armor saves make it pretty devastating, especially against high armor units like mounted Knights!

diver2

I added some purple sludge to act as the greasing agent that the Goblins use to help lift off the flying Gobbo. I kinda feel like that’s what the insides of their mushrooms would look like and so they just mush them up and use them to make it greasier and easier to fling themselves into the air! Here’s some more pics of the completed Goblin Doom Diver:

diver3

diver4

Lastly, I had an extra resin base laying around that I used for some Warmachine models years ago and I thought it would fit perfectly for use as the base of the flying Goblin (sorry for the poor picture quality!). It has a wooden base and so it kinda ties in with the wooden construct that is the doom diver.  I’m pleased with how this turned out and gets me one step closer to getting the O&Gs done by the time the 16th rolls around.

diver5

diver7

The Green Tide is getting closer and closer. Not sure what to do next… maybe the Rock Lobber. I’ve found that I can paint up the war machines pretty quickly but that just delays the inevitable in my opinion… painting the big units! Either way, it all has to get done. Rock Lobber next and then the Night Goblins! Here’s what’s left to do in the next 11 days:

– Black Orc Warboss on foot

– Black Orc Boss Battle Standard Bearer on foot

– Savage Orc Shaman on foot

Orc Warboss on Wyvern (Complete!)

– 38 Night Goblins with 2 Night Goblin Fanatics

32 Savage Orc Boys w/full command (Complete!)

– 35 Black Orcs w/full command

Snotling Pump Wagon (Complete!)

Mangler Squig #1 (Complete!)

Mangler Squig #2 (Complete!)

Rock Lobba #1 (Next!)

– Orc Boy Chariot

Goblin Doom Diver Catapult (Complete!)

The Green Tide: Savage Orcs ready for battle!

funnyorc

Submitted by Iggy Koopa, August 4, 2014 at 8:57 AM.

As the Back to School Bash gets closer and closer I can feel the pressure rise each and every day that passes… I know it’s getting closer and I’m doing all that I can in order to get this army done by August 16th so that I can field a fully painted army. One of my least favorite things about WHFB is the need to field big units of troops. And in this latest edition it definitely lends itself to the phrase “the bigger, the better”… Long gone are the days of 16 to 20 man units and calling it good. With the new addition of Steadfast and Horde Formation it makes it a whole lot more effective (and costly!) to field big units of troops in the 8th edition of Warhammer Fantasy. Because of this, I have a 32 man group of Savage Orcs, a 38 man unit of Night Goblins, and a 35 man unit of Black Orcs… In other words, these are the units that I hate painting because it’s so monotonous and time consuming! I can sit here and complain about it all day long but at the end of the day, it has to be done. And so after hours and hours of painting small detail after detail (man, these savage orcs are VERY detailed!), I offer to you the latest installment to The Green Tide: my Savage Orcs!

savage6

I opted for a brighter green on these guys since they are supposed to be on their own living in their own feral society. They are said to be very crazy, loners, and are exposed to all of the elements and adorn themselves with crazy war paint that is said to give them magical powers. I went ahead and added some blue warpaint to each of the models, whether it’s half of their faces painted, blue designs on their legs, arms, and chest or the tops of their heads are covered in blue paint. This shows their strong belief in the warpaint as they head to war!

savage3

savage2

Again, after playing Warhammer for about 15 years now, I have to hand it to the sculptors at GW. I’ve seen models evolve over the course of many years and they now have some of the finest detail I’ve ever seen on their models and I think the latest Savage Orc models are a true testament to that. I painstakingly spent the time to pick out all the little bone fragments, teeth, and wraps on all of the Savage Orc models and that’s what took the most time. I’m pretty happy with how they turned out though, and I’m glad I took the time to do it because the unit really looks great out on the tabletop. Here’s another shot:

savage4

As you can see, I added a Unit Filler to this unit of Savage Orcs. I don’t like to paint tons and tons of the same models over and over again so throwing in a unit filler is a great way to save some coin as well as break up the monotonous painting. Since some of the models come equipped with their hands up in the air to hold the Big Stabba, I decided to take advantage of the stance and have them carrying a statue of their idol Gork (or Mork!). This counts as 6 Savage Orcs and it also serves to show their strong belief in their gods and how it grants them such a strong ward save! I magnetized the statue for easy transport so that it doesn’t get broken along the way. I’m pleased with how it turned out as well.

savage5

savage

That is the latest on The Green Tide and I’m continuing to mark out units as I complete them… I believe next up will be the Goblin Doom Diver and then on to the Night Goblins. Here’s a list of what all I’ve completed as well as what all remains to be done.

– Black Orc Warboss on foot

– Black Orc Boss Battle Standard Bearer on foot

– Savage Orc Shaman on foot

Orc Warboss on Wyvern (Complete!)

– 38 Night Goblins with 2 Night Goblin Fanatics

32 Savage Orc Boys w/full command (Complete!)

The Green Tide: Snotling Pump Wagon rumbles into action!

funnyorc

Submitted by Iggy Koopa, July 10, 2014 at 8:00 AM.

One of the coolest things about an Orcs & Goblins army is the amount of variety that you can choose from when building your army. I love that you can have lots of crazy Savage Orcs that don’t care about anything but raising hell, or the fact that you make an all Goblin army with a pretty formidable Lord choice to go against other Lord level characters, or that you can add Giants, huge Spiders, and even Trolls to your army… It’s incredible the amount of things that you can choose from. And one of the many things that amuse me about the O&G Army Book is the Snotlings… They are so weak, puny, and all-around annoying… but somehow they still find a way to fit in Orc society. Especially when they can do things like build shoddy Pump Wagons that are capable of doing some great damage! Which brings me to the next addition to the Orcs & Goblins army: The Snotling Pump Wagon!

wagon

I really went to town on this bad boy and used a ton of different pieces out of the ol’ bitz box. As you can see, the main part of the Pump Wagon is a Orc Chariot that has been cannibalized and then I even cut off the front portion to use as the flagpole… I even used one of the sides of the chariot to act as the makeshift crow’s nest. I had a couple of extra snotlings laying around and chose to put them up top and then had a goblin put in the back… to make him think he’s in charge of the whole thing.

wagon4

wagon5

In gaming terms, they use a sail to move 3D6 instead of 2D6 so I made one of those out of cardboard. They also have a deathroller type thing that makes their impact hits much stronger so I had some leftover clay from when I made my Mangler Squigs and fashioned a steamroller with spiky bits on it. I then attached it all together and came out with what you see here: a bitz box bashed together to make my very own Snotling Pump Wagon! I even had enough clay left over to make a mushroom to put on the base… and colored in the traditional red with white dots. Very weedy just like Snotlings!

wagon6

wagon3

So now that the Snotling Pump Wagon is complete it’s time to move on to the next thing…. I think I should stop delaying the inevitable and start working on the big units… They are going to take the longest so I figure I might as well get to work while I still have time. That said, I think I’ll go for the Savage Orcs next. I’m getting there! Thanks for checking back and make sure to come on back, there’s more greenskins waiting to be painted!

Here’s a list of what all I’ve completed as well as what all remains to be done.

– Black Orc Warboss on foot

– Black Orc Boss Battle Standard Bearer on foot

– Savage Orc Shaman on foot

Orc Warboss on Wyvern (Complete!)

– 30 Orc Boys w/full command

– 32 Savage Orc Boys w/full command (Next!)

– 36 Black Orcs w/full command

Snotling Pump Wagon (Complete!)

Mangler Squig #1 (Complete!)

Mangler Squig #2 (Complete!)

– Rock Lobba #1
